Frequently Asked Questions

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a treatment for conditions in the joints, bones, and muscles (aka musculoskeletal conditions). Rehabilitation and treatment are its best uses, but it also happens to be a remarkable way to prevent these conditions from occurring in the first place.

Physical therapy sessions can include:

The goal of physical therapy is to restore function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities in patients with injury or disease.

Do I need a prescription from an MD to see a physical therapist?

You don’t need a referral/prescription from a physician to consult a physical therapist. In New York, treatment can be rendered by a Licensed PT without a referral for 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first.

Does my insurance cover physical therapy?

Most insurance policies pay for physical therapy services if it’s (a) medically necessary and (b) provided under the supervision of a physical therapist. Please contact us or your insurance provider directly to find out whether your treatment sessions will be covered or not.

Do I need to come back after my first session?

Yes. Physical therapy usually isn’t a one-time thing. It’s a collaborative effort between you and your physical therapist to understand how your body reacts to different solutions - by the end, you’ll have created a custom treatment that works best for your body with the least amount of friction possible.

Does physical therapy hurt?

Usually, no. But it’s possible (and quite normal) for people to be sore after the first couple of sessions, especially if they live an inactive lifestyle. It all depends on which treatment methods are applied, since some (e.g., strength training) are more soreness-inducing than others.

Is it normal to be sore after my session?

It’s normal to be sore after a physical therapy session. This happens in strength training (e.g., weight lifting, calisthenics) as well. Your muscle fibers break down due to stress, which causes soreness, but also gives your muscles room to grow. The soreness can be a bit restricting, but take it as a sign that your therapy is doing its job.

How long does each physical therapy session last?

Each session lasts up to 45 minutes, but it depends on your condition and which treatments methods are applied.

How many sessions does physical therapy take before seeing results?

Typically, it takes 4-6 weeks of consistent physical therapy sessions to see significant progress. It varies between patients, but the important thing is sticking to your schedule. Consistency is key to achieving results, even in physical therapy.

What should I wear to physical therapy?

It’s best to wear comfortable clothes to a physical therapy session. You can wear anything you feel comfortable moving around in. Most work-out clothes will do just fine.
