TMJ Disorder - Causes, Symptoms, & Treatment in NYC

Updated: Nov 24, 2021

This post is written by Joshua Weber, PT, DPT, CKTP, Physical Therapist at Riser Physical Medicine.

One of the best parts about living in NYC is being able to experience a true NYC bagel for breakfast!

But what if these bagels are causing jaw pain and difficulty chewing?

Or what if your partner wakes you up in the middle of the night because you’ve been grinding your teeth all night?

You might be suffering from issues related to your Temporomandibular Joint, otherwise known as TMJ disorder.

Causes

Pain experienced during TMJ disorder is most commonly caused by inflammation in the joint caused by trauma such as a whiplash, teeth grinding, heavy chewing, or a blow to the jaw.

TMJ disorders can also be a result of poor head/neck posture or spasms in the muscles of the jaw.

Symptoms

Patients suffering from TMJ disorder will typically experience: pain in their jaw when eating chewy foods, jaw locking or clicking, and/or tension headaches and muscle soreness when waking up in the morning.

Treatment

Luckily, conservative care such as Physical Therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment method for issues involving the TMJ.

Treatment will typically include pain relief methods such as massage and stretching, postural corrections, education on jaw positioning and possible use of night guards to prevent grinding.

Our Physical Therapists at Riser Physical Medicine are uniquely trained in TMJ disorders to help relieve your pain and get you back to enjoying all the NYC bagels you want!
